A pesar de las iniciativas que la más grande liga de futbol americano ha tomado para sofocar las expresiones, acerca de la protesta de Colin Kaepernick por los derechos civiles y perfiles raciales, Waters señala que la liga, a fin de cuentas no puede controlar lo que sucede en el escenario del medio tiempo.
En una carta abierta, el bajista, compositor y activista, Roger Waters invitó a los artistas de espectáculos de medio tiempo Maroon 5, Travis Scott y Big Boi a considerar la poderosa declaración que podrían hacer.
“Les pido que se ‘arrodillen’ en el escenario a plena vista. Les pido que lo hagan en solidaridad con Colin Kaepernick, que lo hagan por cada niño asesinado a tiros en estas calles mediocres, que lo hagan por todas las madres en duelo, y padres y hermanos y hermanas”.
Waters incluyó la siguiente carta en un video de su banda arrodillada en el escenario al final de un show del 24 de septiembre de 2017 en Hartford, Connecticut. Fue solo una cuestión de semanas en las acusaciones de que la NFL estaba negando a Kaepernick.
Waters calificó toda la controversia como una “derrota” de la NFL. Añadió que Kaepernick “es un héroe estadounidense”.
“Si los EE. UU quieren tener un futuro, son los Colin Kaepernicks de este mundo quienes los llevarán allí, de hecho, es Colin Kaepernick quien los está liderando ahora”. Reconoció que hacer una declaración política durante una oportunidad de carrera tan transformadora como el espectáculo de medio tiempo no es una opción fácil, y enojará a millones de personas, pero “es lo correcto”.
Waters ha sido tan políticamente activo en los últimos años como lo ha sido musicalmente. Su último álbum, “Is This the Life We Really Want?”, se basa en gran medida de las cuestiones sociales y políticas que enfrentan el Reino Unido y los EE.UU.

This is not a victory for the NFL, it is a defeat, you have denied football fans everywhere the pleasure and the honor of watching one of the greatest quarterbacks who ever played the game, and you have shown your true colors. You can sit in your boardrooms and huff and puff on your cigars in your glass boxes, but your action is a poke in the eye for everything that is decent in America. Colin Kaepernick is an American hero. If the USA is to have a future, it is the Colin Kaepernicks of this world who will lead you there, in fact, it is Colin Kaepernick who is leading you now. My colleagues Maroon 5, Travis Scott and Big Boi are performing during the halftime show at the Super-bowl this coming Sunday, I call upon them to “take a knee” on stage in full sight. I call upon them to do it in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, to do it for every child shot to death on these mean streets, to do it for every bereaved mother and father and brother and sister.
